sasha_feather: Legend of Korra promo (Korra)

I am so crabby and don't want to hear or talk about two major things that are being talked about right now.

Instead I will tell you about this ridiculous book I read called Archangel by Sharon Shinn. I don't know why I read this book except I liked the character Rachel. It seemed to be loosely based on the Biblical story of Rachel. Gabriel is slotted to be the next Archangel (a religious and political position), but first he must go find his wife, a human who is chosen by Jovah, and her name is communicated to him by the oracle. He will know her face when he sees her because the jewel in his arm will LIGHT UP and ache. FOR REAL. He finds her working as a slave in a merchant's house and rescues her, except she does not want to be rescued because she just got her freedom. Anyways, she does marry him, and their relationship remains rocky through the book. The politics were interesting, as Gabriel uncovers corruption in the angel leadership, and Rachel works to better the lives of indigent children in the country. They are all preparing for the Gloria, during which they will sing to Jovah, with Rachel leading, in order to stop Jovah from reigning down destruction upon the land. Rachel refuses to prove to anyone whether or not she can actually sing, because she dislikes angels on principle. So anyways, plot happens, it moves along quickly, and I mostly enjoyed it. I was bored by the denouement which was more romance-y but with no sex. Shouldn't wing fic have sex in it?

OMG, I LOVED ARCHANGEL when I read it when I was 13. So passionate! So Biblical! I enjoyed it. The sequels get more interestingly sci-fi-y.

It's just a Harlequin Romance only with angels and more plot! I enjoyed it.

Agreed--I read the last of the three original ones first (The Alleluia Files), and that's where the system all deconstructs and gets actually interesting. Or at least it was when I was about 17.

I read several Shinn books after, trying to get that more-SF vibe, but none of them had it.

You are so right! - what's the point of wingfic without sex?!

Is one of the things you don't want to talk about the World Series? ;P

I have wondered this same thing. And yes, these books are fantastically silly. I would enjoy them more if not for the Islamophobia in some of the other books o_O
