First, previews:

Terminator: Genysis (or some other kind of misspelling). This. looks. awesome. On the one hand, how many movies can there be about trying to stop judgment day? On the other hand, who cares? I love this franchise and will definitely see this.

Avengers sequel: This looks pretty good. I may have made some squeaky noises at seeing these two trailers in a row. Marvel knows how to put a good trailer together, for sure.

The Lazarus Effect (Project?): a horror movie, thus I won't see it.

Ted 2. I was thinking, how did they manipulate Mark Wahlberg into making this film, but then I remembered that he has a bunch of shitty things in his past. This looks so, so, terrible.

Chappie. Another SF film that looks a bit like Short Circuit, but by the director of District 9. Probably will be violent. Hugh Jackman has weird hair in it.

I really loved Jupiter Ascending. Fun set pieces, cool effects, lots of action, neat aliens and costumes. Jupiter is a normal person in a lot of ways-- she is brave in a way that is pretty normal, smart but not super smart, sometimes gullible but it's because she wants to believe in people. And in the end she chooses good things for herself, she makes choices she can live with. My friend criticized the movie for having her be a damsel in distress too much, which is a valid criticism. But she also reacts with aplomb to some overwhelming situations. And this SF movie had far less misogyny than others I've seen lately. It also passes the Bechdel test.

I totally love Jupiter Ascending for being what it is. I can definitely see that criticism of Jupiter but I kinda felt like it made her a bit more relatable. She's a normal person in an extraordinary situation and, like, I wouldn't have done much better. She tries to make decent decisions while being way over her head. I liked her a lot and I LIKE HER PUPPY DOG CHANNING TATUM.

Man, you got so much better previews than we did. We did overlap on Chappie, though-- which, from that preview, definitely seemed violent/action-y, but I swear I saw one for it a few months ago that was much less so. Hmm.

I... was much less impressed by Jupiter Ascending than my friends have been. It did this thing where it had really interesting pieces and didn't put them together well-- e.g., it put the protagonist against three scheming royal siblings and then had them never interact after they're introduced, practically treating them as episodic villains-- which historically isn't something I'm able to overlook as much as a lot of people I know are. And I wonder if the difference of opinion is because I mostly don't read fic?

EDIT: and also I should probably note that I couldn't help mentally comparing Jupiter to Yeine from The Hundred-thousand Kingdoms and the setting to the Raadch from Ann Leckie's books, and seriously those are pretty hard comparisons to live up to.

I have been to see it twice now and I love it so much. SO MUCH. It's got some flaws, but I don't even fucking care, it speaks to my inner fourteen-year-old and I'm delighted.

I am extremely excited about seeing this movie. I love secret princess stories and scifi. I really want this movie to do well so that movie studies make a gazillion scifi and fantasy secret princess stories. I really enjoyed this comment (http://prokopetz.tumblr.com/post/111276205767/i-think-what-bothers-me-the-most-about-a-lot-of) about how a lot of the negative reviews are basically bashing on the movie for not being a Chosen Hero story. Because it's a SECRET PRINCESS STORY, duh.

I will fight anyone who pans Jupiter Ascending. It's so terrible and fantastic and the only reason people are saying it is bad is sexism.

Well, also because it is bad, but bad in a way that produces terrible action movies every other month that get fine reviews and make tons of money.
