Tiki

My mom called me today to say that my family's horse Tiki passed away this week. She foundered, and was doing ok for a few days after veterinary care, but then died in the end. A friend of theirs came over with a back hoe and buried her on the property. I think my mom is more upset than I am, at least right now, because she had to deal with all the vet stuff, and now the other horse, Cassidy, is alone. Tiki was in her mid-thirties; we don't know how old exactly. My brother R. and I rode her in 4-H for quite a few years before she retired as a pasture horse. Maybe the sadness will hit me later.

[My two cents: the sadness will hit when it hits - don't worry too much about it. I lost both my mother's parents (aka my grandparents) and didn't cry for years. I focused on all that needed to be done for them, then for my mother, then for my family (cousins, aunts, uncles, etc.) and then for me (school, work, etc.) and it didn't hit me that'd I'd lost my second set of parents until I was in the middle of doing some random task some random amount of time later. Then I was so f*cking sad. On the flip side: When my dog died? I instantly started crying and couldn't get out of bed for the sadness. So: it'll hit you when and how it will - until then, I hope you have plenty of positive memories to enjoy.]

I'm sorry. Our 32-year-old Morgan mare, Passion, died this spring. Her 23-year-old son, Teak, is alone now for the first time in his life. Neal advertised for a boarder to keep him company, but in the meantime, Teak has settled down or at least stopped protesting his solitude. What to do? Teak would be happier with a companion, but less happy whenever the boarder moves on.

Maybe get a goat? I'm curious to see what my parents will do. Cassidy has never been alone either. At least the sheep are around so she's not completely alone; but she and Tiki were nearly always together.

Oh hon, I'm so sorry. She does look like a beautiful, magic horse. <3 (And what a wonderful name.) (If you don't want to talk about it now it makes perfect sense, but I didn't know your family were horsey types, that's cool. <3)

My parents have a hobby farm with sheep, chickens, and horses; well, just one horse now. :( It was an awesome way to grow up. I have lots more photos at my Flickr account and am happy to talk about it. :)
