Agent Carter 1x01

I will keep watching this, but I have mixed feelings about the pilot episode.

cut for spoilers

I love: Peggy's stylish clothes and confident attitude, her skills, and her competence.

I like: the green lighting, the glowing explosives, the old cars.

I don't like: the writing, so far. The episode dragged, nothing felt resolved at all, and I didn't like some of the ways Peggy acted. She had a great friendship with her roommate, but she didn't tell her roommate that her profession was dangerous. She kept a gun in the house and brought in a volatile explosive. Later, it's revealed that Peggy's just a guest there-- not on the lease. She's acting irresponsibly, and her roommate gets killed for it.

Sousa, a co-worker, defends Agent Carter in a meeting. Peggy privately asks him not to, saying she can handle the situation herself. But later, she doesn't take her own advice: she intervenes in secret on behalf of a waitress, physically threatening a rude customer and telling him to eat elsewhere. This is condescending and I don't think Peggy would have acted this way. I think she would have helped the waitress stand up for herself, by teaching her some self-defense or giving her some advice. Peggy's intervention could have back-fired-- the customer could have been the waitress' best-tipping regular; he could have slandered the restaurant; he could have violently taken out his frustration elsewhere. It doesn't make sense that Peggy would have one set of rules for herself and another for other women.

Peggy is positioned alone in the world, with no backup or support other than Jarvis, whom she knows only through Howard Stark. I would like to see Peggy have a network of women that she relies upon. Perhaps the show will go there.
