movie trailers

Previews we saw in front of Thor: Ragnorak

The Black Panther - yay!
Star Wars, the Last Jedi - yay!
Pacific Rim 2 - yay!

Jumanji: welcome to the jungle. This looks pretty bad.
The Maze Runner 3: will probably be bad but hey, Dylan O'Brien is in it! I might eventually watch the DVD.
Downsizing: A film where Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig get shruken down for economic / environmental reasons. The trailer made me uncomfortable and I don't really know why.

Downsizing feels as if it should turn into a distopia, but the trailer didn't show much sign of that. Actually, the trailer didn't show any sign of plot or character development, so I suspect it really will turn into some sort of surprise horror/distopia. Could that be what you're picking up on?

Downsizing made me feel uncomfortable too, I think because I couldn't tell what it was trying to be. Usually I have a good sense of the genre from a trailer, but it was just like, "This is an idea that is being shown on a screen," and there didn't feel like there was any emotion behind it? It was weird.

I got the sense from the trailer that Kristen Wiig chickened out and DIDN'T shrink and the movie was going to be about Matt Damon regretting his decision to become small, or trying to convince her to join him or...?

It feels like a satire on the tiny house phenomenon, which is SO bougie. Only rich people can afford to live small. Everything felt very white picket fence/astroturf/hegemonic riche in the downsized film. Not a future with room for us in it.

Everybody above made good points and maybe it was one of those things but I definitely had the same reaction as you to the Downsizing trailer. It was some kind of uncanny valley effect not in terms of visuals, but still something that made me want to look away.
