Previews in front of Mission Impossible were dire. Keely turned to me and said “I have zero interest in that” when we saw a preview about a kidnapping movie. One trailer was for a James Cameron film with a lot of CGI; the main character is a robot girl with huge anime eyes that are pretty creepy in an uncanny valley sort of way.

MI: Fallout has a bunch of info-dumping in the first 15-20 minutes, which is not a great way to start an action film. Once past that, however, it’s light and fun with satisfying set pieces. I was pleased to see Angela Basset. It is not a deep or meaningful film in any way, but it is fun.

I've watched some very silly action movies lately as a way to unwind. Here are my brief thoughts!

Kingsman 2: anti-rec for misogyny and weird narrative choices and like, a general sense of grossness.

47 Meters down: this is a really, really bad movie, but is kind of fun to watch and make fun of. The premise is that 2 sisters go into a shark cage as a tourist thing. The cable breaks and they fall to the ocean floor while inside the cage. The funniest thing is that they speak and have conversations with each other while underwater, and this is not explained at all.

Everest: Based on Jon Krakauer's book "Into Thin Air". I unexpectedly enjoyed this a lot. It is a well-made example of the disaster/survival genre of film. The one puzzling thing was that the film expected me to care about and root for a character that is portrayed fairly negatively. The scenery was beautiful.

Jungle (2017): I had a dream with Daniel Radcliffe in it (perplexing), so I felt like I should watch some of his movies. This one was good if you like that sort of thing. It's based on a true story about an Israeli man who goes on an adventure in Bolivia and ends up lost in the wild for several weeks, and just barely survives. Content notes: drugs, one scene of self-surgery, animal harm (hunting).
sasha_feather: Moriary and his neck, Sherlock BBC (Moriarty)
Previews were:
2 different movies starring Tiffany Haddish, both of which look cute, light, and fun. Night School and Nobody's Fool. She has a lot of upcoming films-- good for her.

Blindspotting, starring Daveed Diggs. This looks intense and violent.

The Hate You Give, based on the novel.

The Meg. A movie about a giant shark, starring Jason Statham. Looks kind of awesome.

The Sisters Brothers. A Western starring zero women. Not my jam.

I don't want to spoil "Sorry to Bother You," so have a cut.

Previews from the movie:

I usually try to catch all the previews but walked in a few minutes late this time.

Red Sparrow:
Jennifer Lawrence doing a weird accent, in a movie that looks like it should be about Black Widow. I read on twitter that this film is rapey.

Annihilation:
Lots of women in this one, and it's science fiction, and I love Natalie Portman.
BUT it's horror, which I don't love, and it touted itself as being "by the director of Ex Machina," which is a film I loathed.

Love, Simon:
a teen coming-out film. This one looks totally heartwarming, and needed.
sasha_feather: Amelie, white woman with dark hair, smiling cheerfully (Amelie)
Ready Player One: this looks bad

Jurassic Park sequel. whoop, maybe i better catch up and actually watch the one that came before this.

Avengers: Infinity War.

Alita: Battle Angel. I was creeped out by some uncanny valley aspects in this preview. Why do her eyes need to be super big? It has a lot of good actors, though. Who knows.

A Wrinkle in Time. This looks great!! Go go mixed race Meg!!
sasha_feather: by Such_heights (Dani Sense8)
Previews we saw in front of Thor: Ragnorak

The Black Panther - yay!
Star Wars, the Last Jedi - yay!
Pacific Rim 2 - yay!

Jumanji: welcome to the jungle. This looks pretty bad.
The Maze Runner 3: will probably be bad but hey, Dylan O'Brien is in it! I might eventually watch the DVD.
Downsizing: A film where Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig get shruken down for economic / environmental reasons. The trailer made me uncomfortable and I don't really know why.

Some previews I saw at the movies yesterday:

Home Again

Reese Witherspoon plays a mom, recently separated from her husband, who hooks up with a younger guy. Events transpire, the younger guy and his friends move into her guest house; she navigates her feelings regarding her husband and her possible new, younger love interest. I think this looks cute. People have been talking about age-difference movies on Twitter, and it's nice to see one where the woman is older.

Mother!

Darren Aronofsky horror film. Not my jam.
Speaking of age differences:
Jennifer Lawrence is 27
Javier Bardem is 48
21 yr age difference

Breathe

Andrew Garfield plays a wealthy man paralyzed by polio. This could be good, or it could be ableist trash? The preview looks promising in that he uses his wealth and privlege to help other disabled people; to develop a wheelchair with a respirator attached; etc.

Some previews we saw:

Revenant:

Man pain dick flick! Set in the old West, starring Leo DiCaprio. Based on true actual man pain events!

Crimson Peak:

A horror film by Guillermo Del Toro. I love GDT but don't like horror films. Torn. Maybe I'll see it on DVD during the day time.

Bridge of Spies:

Looks boring to me. Lots of old white dudes and cold war stuff. *shrug*

Point Break:

A remake with a bunch of young unknown actors. Might be a fun popcorn film.

The Woods:

Horror movie.

Joy:

This director is making movies with the same two people, over and over-- Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. Well, I guess if you have a working formula! This does look like a fun movie, but the preview didn't give us much to go on.

Previews we saw yesterday before Guardians:

Interstellar:
This looks wonderful! An SF movie about a mission to find a habitable planet for humans to live on. Unfortunately it is directed by Christopher Nolan (man pain expert) and stars Matthew McC. The words "family" and "love" were used a lot in the preview. It will probably have a terrible, white dude story and great special effects.

Big Hero 6:
An animated film. Looks very cute. I look forward to reading meta about the inflatable robot and depictions of fat characters.

Dracula Untold:
Looks boring and gross. Again man pain central. Some medieval dude needs to protect his wife and kid so he becomes a vampire! snooze.

The Hobbit next chapter:
I'm not paying much attention to these tbh.

The Hunger games next chapter:
YAAAAAAY!

Into the Woods:
Has some cool actors and looks neat; the preview was minimal.

Night at the Museum sequel:
Looked cheesy to me and not funny? There was a joke about a monkey peeing on some miniaturized characters, which... I guess if you find that funny, you'll like this film. I never saw the first one. Has Robin Williams in it.
