Language

As much as I love the references to the patriarchy, I wonder if I should be saying kyriarchy. I'm not even sure how to pronounce that word.

A note on inclusive language:

"Those of us with disabilities."

"The queer community is our community. It is us."

Meditate on that one.

Kyriarchy is Greek, kyrios = lord + archy = to lead.

And if you were old enough to remember bad 80s music, you would remember one particular song by Mr. Mister that included lyrics with the proper pronunciation of "kyrie". (Based on a Christian hymn/prayer/thing.)

KEE-ree-ar-kee is pretty much right.

Which leads me to an anecdote that I tell a bit too often, but which delights me anyway, so I'm gonna tell it again.

Ted Nelson, the guy who invented hypertext, is the only person ever to have made a pun on my real name, which is Kirrily. I was involved with a friend of his, and my friend mentioned this to Ted, who said, "Oh, so you're having a Kirrily liaison?"

OHMIGOSH I LOVE THAT PUN.

...I think I sang too many requiems in high school choir.

That's pretty hilarious. Now I wish I could have made such a pun!

It's from the Catholic Mass:
Christe eleison, Kyrie eleison
"Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy."

Being a child of the sixties, I learned this from the Electric Prunes' Mass in F Minor.

Also d_c, that pun is awesome!

Now as to the nut: Out to the barricades, my comrades! We are us!

kee-ree-ark-ee. that's my theory. kyri- like kyrie as in kyrie elaison.

this pronunciation brought to you by person who sung a lot of latin in high school.

See, I thought the first syllable sounded more like "kir" (the booze) and was Greek. Not that the word will come up often in conversation until I go to WisCon. And it is a very fine word!

I agree with kalmn's pronunciation.

sorry though, I can't help but get out of this new term a mental image of my daughter being bossy to her brother and her friends, LOL

Also, I have a fondness for "lararium" for a similar reason, and have mentally dubbed my home office "the lararium."

And that is bad why exactly? :D

It's only that you're being all serious and linguisty, and I'm snorting with laughter over a bossy 5-yr old. ;D

Do you suppose parents unconsciously know the most fitting name to bestow? Or do kids grow into their names, osmotically absorbing their meanings and making them manifest?

[identity profile] sasha-feather.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh! I don't know. Maybe it depends how intuitive the parents are. Some people do hate their names, after all.

I've switched to kyriarchy full-time since I started blogging, and it's much more satisfying (though it's made this username obsolete).

Hahah! Good point. What's your blog?

Yeah I think "patriarchy" might have subtle anti-father sentiment, and I have newfound respect for the power of subtle messages.

Thanks. :)
