I found this article about Frank really interesting! It seems like the show made some significant changes to his character, but did not make the story any less ableist.
In the novel, there's also a side-character who cannot get her anti-depressants after the virus hits, and also kills herself. I found that plot line very troubling, because it was also handled as if her death was a noble sacrifice that had to be made in the face of the ensuing apocalypse. She also took the same meds as I do, which made it hit very close to home!
