lim. River, Serenity, The Operative, and Book (briefly). Serenity is River's story, The Operative is her nemesis, not Mal's, the entirety of it hinges upon River. "The consequence of sound," of speaking-- River silences Simon to keep him from using the safe word that will send her to sleep. She unsilences herself, she tells her secrets, and unmakes/remakes the world. She speaks, and people die. It is not just that River cannot trust her senses, although often she cannot, it is that when she moves, when she acts, when she speaks, she must be willing to live with the consequences. She steps carefully, so carefully! It is no wonder she is afraid.

Books I've read recently:
The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester. I enjoyed this despite it's many many flaws. In it's favor are fast pacing, interesting ideas, constant peril, some exploration of class, nice world-building, and good writing. Going against it: Thin characterization, terrible treatment of disability, race, rape culture, and an unlikable protagonist. It was good light reading for me at a time when I needed that, but I recommend skipping it.
Distances by Vandana Singh. Thought-provoking novella about a mathmetician/scientist who uses an organic process to explore equation-poems. Loved this concept and others in the book! I would have like more exploration of the many, many ideas packed into this slim volume: it would have made a great novel. I also thought the ending was a downer. Still, I recommend it specifically as a feminist hard SF book that has a female mathematician as the protagonist and has a feminist take on science. That is not easy to find!
