the female gaze, perhaps
Sep. 30th, 2013 04:05 pmAnother thing I liked about Top of the Lake!
No male gaze. I'll attempt to make this post spoiler-free if I can.
There are naked women walking around at the little commune: they are just going about their business, like in an Alison Bechdel comic. The camera doesn't linger on women's bodies. When people have sex, there is a certain business-like, groping quality about it, no blurred focus. There is a scene where it is quite clear that a man (Johnno) goes down on a woman while she's standing up, and they are both basically fully clothed, in a public bathroom; that's something I've never seen before on film.
I keep thinking about it! What a great show.
