Handsome Devil - Gay British boarding school movie featuring Andrew Scott. This was cute and I like how it focused on queer friendship rather than romance. It's at an all-boys school so there are not many women in it. Excellent soundtrack. Content notes for: outing someone; homophobic bullying; bullying that is basically sanctioned by the teachers.
I really like Andrew Scott. After watching this, there is a way he moves, using excess facial features and what looks like tics. It reminded me of Michael J. Fox, which in this case is not a good thing becase Fox used those motions to cover for his Parkinson's symptoms. I hope that is not what is going on.
San Andreas - a disaster movie starring the Rock.
Gotta anti-rec this one, because the story is about the power of heterosexuality and the nuclear family. The ex-wife's boyfriend is the bad guy; the disaster seems to serve as an impetus for getting the family back together. There were some good effects and set-pieces but this film was anti-queer and it was set mainly in San Franscisco.
The film Independence Day is a disaster movie that has staying power becuase: it's funny; it has an air of international cooperation; diverse cast; and strangers help each other out, which makes me feel good about humanity. I like an ensemble cast. Plus the disaster is not realistic, so the destruction is kind of silly rather than just tragic.
