Movies notes: Yesterday

I can't say that this movie was good, but I kind of enjoyed it. The friend I went with really hated it, and I can't discount any of her arguments: the love story was bad, and the film didn't focus on people's love for the music, etc. I found watching "Yesterday" to be a pleasant distraction from my facial pain; it had a sunny quality to it. I enjoyed the Beatles tunes. The lead actor, Himesh Patel, was lovely. There were some genuinely funny moments. I particularly liked Joel Fry as Rocky, a guy who makes fun of Ed Sheeran to his face, and is trying to live outside the concept of time. It was nice to see people of color in lead roles.
The interesting magical premise is not explored at all. Jack wakes up after being hit by a bus, and finds out that no one besides himself remembers the Beatles or knows any of their songs. He's a musician and starts playing Beatles songs, which leads him to great success and fame. The main conflicts are that he feels like a liar, and that his prospective girlfriend doesn't want him to move away to LA. It's a simple story that doesn't take risks. These conflicts are resolved when he decides to be truthful and give up fame and fortune. I would have enjoyed a deeper and more interesting exploration of this premise, and it does feel like this film missed an opportunity. But it's an inoffensive film with some cute and funny moments and good music, if that is what you are looking for.
