TV shows - Jan 2021
Jan. 24th, 2021 10:19 pmTV I've enjoyed lately:
The Mandalorian, seasons 1-2. Disney Plus.
I liked this a lot and agree with
marina 's thoughts here:

The first couple of episodes were boring, but I got into it a lot about mid season 1. There are a lot of wonderful women characters, more so than what is typical for Star Wars. It's a hopeful show: the premise is people risking their careers and their lives to save one baby. There is no romance; people focus on their work, their friendships, parenting, and community.
The world-building details are thin; it's clearly meant to be taken as a fantasy.
Content note: the episode "The Passenger" is a bit in poor taste. Baby Yoda eats some (unfertilized) frog eggs from a sentient Frog Lady that they are transporting. It's a repeating gag in this episode.
Lower Decks - CBS all access
A half-hour, animated comedy in the Star Trek universe. This was a delight. Our main cast is four ensigns on a ship called Cerritos. Three of them are fresh-faced, eager to prove themselves, and are giant nerds. The fourth, Mariner Beckett, is the child of the captain, has authority issues, and is super bad ass. Their ship focuses on "second contact," following up after the Enterprise has left a civilization.
There are a lot of references to Trek canon. What makes it different from watching other Trek: it's much faster paced. The dialog is snappy and quick. It's sometimes a bit rude in its humor. It has a Futurama vibe, but the crew are all very competent, in contrast to Fry and company.
Content note: repeated use of "lame" to mean "bad/uncool."
Lupin - Netflix, French w/English subtitles
I was impressed with the first episode of this, which is about a gentleman thief in Paris. It's neat to see this type of character, a master of disguise and someone who's always one step ahead, played by a dark-skinned Black actor.
The 2nd episode did not impress me as much. There were a couple of things that just seemed super unrealistic. I will probably continue with this show, though.
Content note: suicide.
Short Treks - CBS All access
(The new batch). I actively disliked most of these. They were real bummers! Sometimes they were aiming for humor that to me, did not hit the mark, and instead seemed mean. However I loved the one titled "Q&A". It features Spock and Number One stuck in an elevator, and getting to know each other. It was brilliant.
