I used to think it was intimidating also. The whole idea of serialization and reboots just makes me go NO. But: comics are great for people like me who have attention span issues (this happened with chronic pain/ fatigue). I can't plow through novels anymore so I read fanfic and comics. What helped a lot was going to comics club, where we squee in a loosely-structured way, and share comics among each other-- meaning we don't have to buy things. I also check things out from the library. I mostly focus on non-superhero titles that don't go on forever. I like non-fiction comics which are often single volume. So, that's what I've done!
