Oct. 7th, 2017 09:41 pmAs you may know, I enjoy the occasional disaster/ survival movie and have been in the mood for them lately.
Open Water - 2003
This was effective at being horrifying, but I didn't like it, for spoilery reasons. It's a fairly well-done, low-budget indie movie in which 2 SCUBA divers get stranded in the open ocean. Their tour guides mess up the head count and leave them behind.
Usually with this type of movie, there's some kind of survival story, so there is tension, and then relief at the end due to a rescue or the people rescuing themselves. In this one, the people died! Quietly, in the open ocean. It's a bit like the Perfect Storm but not as well made. So there was no relief, just that haunting feeling; it's much more of a horror movie than a disaster movie.
Deepwater Horizon - 2016
I watched this for Dylan O'Brien (oh fandom, haha), who plays a fairly minor role. I liked it better than I expected. It has a lot of good actors, including Kurt Russell, John Malkovich and Gina Rodriguez. It satisfyingly paints the BP company men as the villains. A straightforward disaster film.
