Ctrl+ and Ctrl- will quickly zoom in and out for you, if you find keyboard shortcuts preferable to going to the toolbar all the time. Not sure why it doesn't save! Any chance you ever followed someone's instructions to set up some kind of custom styles for Twitter? My only other suggestion would be to clear your browser cache-- annoying in other ways but might solve this.
