Movie notes - Christmas time 2017
Dec. 29th, 2017 06:53 pmWill be away from keyboard for a bit, as my internet is down in the apartment.
Here are some movie notes:
The Greatest Showman - Hugh Jackman, Zendaya, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams
This is a delightful musical about PT Barnum. It's not historical but rather about spectacle, color, and fun. Well acted and directed with good singing and dancing and costumes. I really enjoyed it. It has a little person played by a little person, and a diversity-positive message.
Sing Street - Netflix
A fairly boring film about a kid in Ireland in the 1980s who starts a band. Although he says that he's a futurist ("no nostalgia"), this film is all about nostalgia for a particular time and place. There were some fun musical bits, but the main actor just wasn't a good enough singer to carry this film, and since I don't have nostalgia for his type of experience, I found it hard to relate to the characters. Content notes for bullying, domestic violence/child abuse; and lots of anti-queer slurs.
The Big Short - netflix
Another fairly boring movie. Well acted and well made, but the characters in this film are Wall Street investors with little sense of morality or ethics (with the exception of Mr. Baum, played by Steve Carell, who actually gets a narrative arc). They are people who sense the coming housing/mortgage crisis and make bets ("investments") that the economy will fail... their motivation is basically to get rich off of a disaster. The film did attempt to educate the audience about what caused the financial disaster of 2008, which I appreciated. Nearly every character in the film is a white straight man, and some of them were hard to tell apart.
A Christmas Prince - Netflix
A cute, family-friendly modern fairy tale type of story, full of fun romance tropes. A budding journalist gets assigned to cover a Prince's coronation. Searching for a story, she gets mistaken for a new tutor and goes with it. She forms a friendship with the Princess that she is pretending to tutor, discovers secret documents about the Prince, and eventually wins his heart. There are some pretty horses, a beautiful castle in winter, etc. Alice Krige (the Borg Queen) plays the Queen.
