Yesterday I had fun pet-sitting a Greyhound friend named Puck. He's a large guy with a brindle coat. He's much more confident and outgoing than Abbie. So, while they have some similarities, their personalities are also very different. For instance, Abbie is anxious and needs to be coaxed into things like going into the kitchen (where the floor is slippery). She doesn't go into the garbage at all. Puck went into the bathroom garbage because I forgot to shut the door when I left for lunch. He really made himself right at home.

It was neat having another dog in the house for the day and I really enjoyed it. Abbie mostly just put up with it.

Florida voters decided to outlaw dog racing, so now there will be many Greyhounds looking for homes. They are wonderful pets, especially for apartments and houses with fenced yards. They rarely bark. I'm happy to answer any questions about my experience with Greyhounds!

best thing: I find Greyhounds to be very easy dogs to take care of, and well suited to my life. Abbie is cute, and makes me smile, and is just nice to have around. She gets me out of the house, and is generally undemanding.

worst thing: One is not supposed to let them off leash in an unfenced area, because they can run away very quickly and get lost. They don't have great recall.

Unexpected thing: They sleep with their eyes partway open, which is both cute and creepy. They are relatively low energy and sleep most of the time.

I'm thinking about looking into greyhound adoption; my main animal companion is approaching the end of her life, and I could use the companionship. It would have to be the right greyhound because prey drive and I live with cats, but I find the idea of a greyhound extremely appealing.

Good!! There are some that get along fine with cats, the rescue group often evaluates this factor. Abbie has a low prey drive relative to other greyhounds.

Greyhounds are so mellow--being around Abbie is soothing.
