Movie notes: Sunshine and 50/50

Sunshine, dir. Danny Boyle, 2007
A science fiction thriller with horror elements. The crew of the Icarus II is on a mission to re-ignite the sun. Their mission begins to go awry when they discover a distress beacon from the long-lost Icarus I.
I really dug this, though it felt like more style than substance. The visuals are striking, and right away I recognized clips from the Starships vid. Characters are thinly drawn; the filmmakers seem to rely more on the the beauty and talent of the actors, which actually works, because this stars Chris Evans, Michelle Yeoh, and Cillian Murphy. Sometimes the stylish distortions made it difficult to tell exactly what was going on.
Content notes: One character is thought to have died from suicide. Fire, injuries, death in space.

A moving drama (with some comedy) about 27-year-old Adam (Joseph Gordon Leavitt) who is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that has a 50% survival rate. His relationships with parents, friends, and lovers change and evolve. I dislike Seth Rogen, who plays the best friend, but after the first 10 minutes or so he wasn't so bad, and his character grew on me. He's apparently playing himself (more or less) in this film, so IDK? This is well written and well acted. There's a greyhound that appears in a few scenes.
The strangest part to me was that Adam appears to own a house in Seattle while working at a public radio station.
