Thank you for the DW points!
Jul. 14th, 2023 05:27 pmThank you to my friend who gave me Dreamwidth points!! I super appreciate it! I have a whole bunch of icons now and I can post frivolous polls for 6 months.
As I am not using Twitter right now (possibly never again!), I am trying to use this space more.
I feel stuck in the apartment due to air quality alerts, so I am trying to clean and improve the space. I am watching a little bit of a show, cleaning for a few minutes, then going back to the show. Shows I've watched recently:
Somebody, Somewhere. HBO.
This is an interesting comedy about a woman, Sam, living in the small university town of Manhattan, Kansas. She's lonely and grieving but an old high school classmate named Joel befriends her. They have a ton of fun together. Joel and several of the other characters are queer. Sam is a fat woman and it was so nice to see her just using her body and enjoying it. She swims, walks, bikes, sings. She seems to be un-selfconscious in this way.
The Bear, season 2. Hulu.
This was so good...?! I was really into it. However, I skipped the Christmas episode, which seemed to be one hour of yelling, and did not take place at the restaurant, and did not have my favorite characters (Sydney, Tina, Marcus). I was very moved by some of the character arcs! I loved the music!
"The Bear" does not pass my friend's test of "are there any queer characters?" Which is odd in this day and age.
Bad smell/taste news
Ran an errand this morning and thought, maybe I can get a Subway sandwich. When I walked into the store I was hit by the very strong burned-cooking-oil smell. I could not tolerate it, spun around and immediately left. This was really uspetting! It's like, new limits and problems all the time. Food prep has always been difficult for me and now it's set to Hard Mode.
If I do drive-thru, I can at least pick up food without having to go inside the restaurants, so I can try Culver's and Milio's, for example. I was able to eat some Culver's French fries and spicy chicken tenders, about half of an order. Lots of half-eaten food in my fridge.
Today I am washing everything, spraying stuff down with alcohol, vacuuming, etc. This is hard for me but feels nice also!

Hard Mode is Just Not Fair!
Date: 2023-07-15 08:46 pm (UTC)Glad to hear "Somebody Somewhere" is good -- I liked the look of the lead actor.
I'm so sorry that smell-o-vision is still playing in your living room. I had that happen briefly and my readers postulated:
Given your recent brain excitements, I do think it's worth mentioning to your doc (if only to have a handy recording of the experience in YourChart).
The All Screaming Christmas Episode on the Bear was indeed horrific -- why make it twice as long as all the others?
I found the finale unnecessary. The penultimate episode ended with the power of possibility and teamwork and go go go chef chef chef, while the last ep left me feeling "no matter what, we'll always have our anxieties and rough edges and frustrations." And that's probably true, but I want some fantasy fun from my shows.
Re: Hard Mode is Just Not Fair!
Date: 2023-07-15 09:06 pm (UTC)Can you tell me the significance of the choco banana that they made for Unc (Oliver Platt)?
Re: Hard Mode is Just Not Fair!
Date: 2023-07-15 10:07 pm (UTC)I was also mystified -- MyGuy reminded me that Unc reminisced about chocolate dipped bananas (during the hellish Xmas fight episode). Since the bananas were at present unavailable they substituted the banana shaped chocolate.
It's amazing to think that a restaurant would know any customer's history and tastes and associations with different foods to provide a custom dessert. Also a little creepy in the data-mining way. But then if I was organizing a special event for someone, I'd be delighted to nudge the cooks into highly-specific foods.
Re: Hard Mode is Just Not Fair!
Date: 2023-07-15 10:13 pm (UTC)Oh and I just love Oliver Platt -- I believe him as an intellectual who also enjoys playing around, no matter where I see him. (Reminds me of my father, actually.)
In addition to the West Wing, I loved his work in The Big C, which also features Laura Linney, John Benjamin Hickey, and Gabourey Sidibe. It's free right now on Roku and always at the library. 30 minutes well spent.
She survives.
