ETA: I added one song and posted this to the Ao3, here, https://archiveofourown.org/works/52618357

I've been working on a Bucky Barnes fan playlist. Bucky is Going Thru It; it's about struggle and hope. My own version of this character is the fanon one, influenced by the many stories, art, and ideas fans have come up with about him as a disabled queer veteran with complex trauma, and in some stories, a Jewish identity. Some examples are,
Ain't No Grave by spit and vinegar (locked, must have ao3 account to view. Podfic available.)

Winter's Children by neery (Podfic available);

a Dira Sudis story where he works on undoing his triggers, "There is no shortage of Blood," https://archiveofourown.org/works/12692403
my story, "Bucky's Reasons for Staying Alive" (podfic available),

notes on why each song is included (x-posted).

1. Pursuit of Happiness (Nightmare) by Kid Cudi et al.
Bucky's got the night terrors. Whoever he is talking to here, a therapist? a friend? that person doesn't get it.
The hopeful future in this song is hard won, almost desperate.

2. Shove It - Santigold with Spank Rock. The "Brooklyn we go hard" is just irresistable. I think there's a fan vid I like to this song featuring Bucky but I don't remember. (I will look for it later but if you happen to know please link me.) I also feel like Bucky would feel empowered by the fuck off lyrics going on here.

3. This Year - the Mountain Goats. Possibly a tonal change here but wait! It's the quintessential song about hope in hard times. That just fuckin' hang on feeling.

4. Red Right Hand - Flaming Lips / Nell Smith. TBH I put this on here for vibes reasons. the lyrics seem to be about a myserious abusive figure so that could fit with the alexander pierce character in CATWS (captain america the winter soldier). also i don't know, something about guilt and bloody hands, Bucky's right hand being biological vs. the left hand metal...

5. Wolf Like Me, TV on the Radio. This is a song about werewolves, it's on here for vibes reasons, i think Bucky likes it and has it on his iPod. But it could fit your werewolf AU fic. Werewolf imagery tracks with feeling like your body is not your own. i love how this song changes tempo, dang, it's so cool.

6. LES Artistes - Santigold. This is one of my favorite songs ever, and it's about that struggle to find your voice and be heard and stay true to yourself. Honestly could work for any character who is going thru it.

7. Sometimes - Gerry Cinnamon. Just sometimes! It's like that sometimes!
I don't love that this song uses the word "idiot."

8. I'm Alive - Metric. It's about feeling that upcoming panic attack. For Bucky it's about his feelings / self coming back to him. the "regrets are few" section is more like, silly, nice encouragement words to get through that.

9. Maps - Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I feel like this is more, they (the powers that be) don't love you (Bucky) like I (fandom) love you. The powers that be don't understand this character nor care about him like we do.

10. Hang me up to dry - the cold war kids. Just on here for vibes and emotions-- anger, confusion, resentment, exhaustion but with a dance beat. I love the sound of the spinning bicycle chain or whatever it is.

11. Feeling Good, a cover by Muse of a Nina Simone song.
So what this song evokes for me WRT to Bucky is that he's just killed a whole base full of Hyrda evil dudes, he's covered in blood, he's walking out free. WRATH. picture a glorious action-movie montage with LOTS of blood, mayhem, and killing.

12. Harmony Hall - Vampire Weekend. IDK if this one fits tonally but I like the lyric "i don't wanna live this way, but i don't wanna die." also the wicked snakes inside a place you thought was dignified! That is a good theme, relatable, and used to good effect in CATWS.

13. Daylight by David Kushner. It's a captivating and moody song I heard on the radio, about addiction. could also be a vampire AU song. There is a fandom-famous fic, Ain't No grave (see beginning of post) about Bucky being an addict.

14. All these things I've done - the Killers. I MEAN. the thing is. Bucky is so much older than he can take. he needs help! You gotta help him out! the lone-hearted boy he used to be! OK ok, the thing is. Bucky does not want to be a soldier. he wants to shed that identity but does not know how. I've got soul but I'm not a soldier is his recovery anthem. De-HYDRA-ate. (This is a joke he uses in a fic, I think it's Ain't No Grave).
all these things that he's done. the are a LOT. If you can't hold on... hold on anyway.

15. Gold Lion - Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I don't remember why I put this on here but I like it. It has REM levels of lyrical poetics going on and has good vibes.

16. Dance yourself Clean - LCD soundsystem. This song is very long and has this hypnotic quality. I'm a slut for songs like this that have big dynamics changes.

17. Hold On by the Alabama Shakes. the part that is like "I didn't think I'd make it to 22 years old "-- Bucky thought he would die in the war. Maybe there is a reason he lived and he can hold on to find that reason. this song and MAPS both use WAIT! Which has that feeling of, oh my life is spinning out of control, please just pause!

18. Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings. Father John Misty. I don't know the song well!! Gotta listen to it 80 more times. But it fits the vibes of this playlist, getting through, knowing you need help.

19. Pedestrian at Best, Courtney Barnett. Another song I don't know super well but I feel like the emotions fit.

20. Left Hand Free, alt-J. I think there is a lot that can be said about Bucky's hands, one metal, one flesh. How he wields them and to what purpose.

21. Die Young - Sylvan Esso. "I was gonna die young, now I gotta wait for you." Both Bucky and Steve planned on dying young, in the war. They keep living instead. There's gotta be a reason they keep living and maybe it's for each other.

22. Roll the Bones - Shakey Graves. Newly added to this list, i love the driving rhythm of it. Several songs on here have these awesome rhythm and dynamics changes.
