The radio station I used to listen to in Raleigh used to play "Major Tom (coming home)" a fair bit, which meant that I had probably heard it a dozen times before I had even heard of David Bowie and "Space Oddity," and I had probably heard it a hundred times before I ever listened to "Space Oddity" or realized that "Major Tom" was fix-it fanfic.
It's just weird to think about this before-internet, before-streaming era, when the only point of reference I had for David Bowie was somebody else's fix-it fanfic, and I couldn't just pull up Spotify and hear David Bowie.
