The Unusuals
Jun. 30th, 2011 10:06 pmNetflix thought I would like a show called "The Unusuals", which is streaming, and so far I do! It is an NYPD show, with dark humor and interesting characters. Amber Tamblyn is the main character (from Joan of Arcadia), and that guy from The Hurt Locker is her partner (Jeremy Renner). There are many other familiar faces. The writing is good and I've watched 5 episodes already. The only thing that bothers me is that it is soooo heterosexual. It's hard to even slash any of the characters because most of them have love interests. Five episodes in, no queer people anywhere, or even nicely slash-able ones. IMDB tells me that there are only 10 episodes, so I guess I'll be done soon!
My favorite characters so far are partners Leo Banks and Eric Delahoy, played by Harold Perrineau and Adam Goldberg respectively. Leo is anxious all the time; he thinks he's fated to die at age 42, so he wears a bulletproof vest everywhere. There's a very cute scene where he is too shy to talk to a woman he is interested in, so he uses note cards to introduce himself!! Leo also expects to die soon due to a medical diagnosis, and it makes him reckless and almost totally unafraid. He seems to exist in strange kind of Zen state.
Also Amber Tamblyn is GREAT.
