2012: the golden year for movies
Jun. 27th, 2013 08:52 amI was thinking yesterday about how I saw a lot of movies in the theater in 2012. Partly this was due to an unusually hot summer, but largely it was because there were many movies I was interested in seeing. This year there don't seem to be any such films available. Perhaps 2013 is the fallow period after a great harvest. I saw so many good movies that I was spoiled for choice, and maybe rated some of them lower than I would have in a lesser year.
Of the movies I saw in the theater last year, several featured women or girls in leading roles:
Brave
The Hunger Games
Snow White and the Huntsman
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Pitch Perfect (I saw this later at the bargain theater)
A couple were good or decent-quality super hero movies:
The Avengers
The Amazing Spider Man
I saw Looper and the Perks of Being a Wall Flower at the bargain movie theater, and enjoyed both of them. SkyFall I also enjoyed relative to my ability to enjoy Bond films. The Bourne Legacy wasn't terrific but I enjoyed it for what it was.
Two smaller films that were utter gems:
Premium Rush, a film about bike messengers with Joseph Gordon-Levitt
End of Watch, a surprising movie about two cops in L.A. that I saw on a whim and ended up loving.
The only movie I didn't enjoy was The Dark Knight Rises. That's a total of 14 movies.
This year I've only seen Iron Man 3.
eta, I saw a film festival movie called Winter Nomads, an independent foreign film.
