Thunder Force - Netflix. Melissa McCarthy, Octavia Spencer.
This was just OK. Watched it with a friend and we had a nice time but it wasn't anything special. I'm not really sure why it didn't succeed; comedy is hard I guess.
Hero - 1992.
A little movie I'd never heard of but loved. It stars Dustin Hoffman, Geena Davis, Joan Cusack, Andy Garcia.
Hoffman plays Bernie, a ne'er-do-well sort of guy who is grumpy and about to head to prison for fencing stolen goods. He comes across a plane crash and reluctantly stops to rescue people off the plane, at great risk to himself. He leaves behind a shoe, but takes some folks' wallets.
Geena Davis plays Gale, a reporter who was on the plane and she leads a search for the Good Samaritan. Instead of finding Bernie, though, she finds homeless veteran John Bubber, who ended up with Bernie's other shoe. Bubber is good-looking and a better person than Bernie, and he becomes a media darling.
This is a funny character drama and I enjoyed it a lot!
Content note: the film begins with a suicide of the jumping-off-buildings sort, this is not taken seriously by the narrative. It's meant to show Gale being a callous reporter. At the end of the film Bubber contemplates jumping off a building, and does not.
