Lady Bird (library DVD). Dir. Greta Gerwig

I think this is a good movie, but it's very serious and features people yelling, and I was in the wrong mood for it. It's about a 17 year old girl who is in her last year of high school. She fights constantly with her mom, who is a difficult person. She's on a foolish quest to get a boyfriend, I say foolish because she's extremely bad at making choices in who to pursue. And she wants to go to New York for college, which her mother disapproves of, mostly for financial reasons. But Lady Bird is so desperate to get away from her mom that she literally throws herself out of a moving car-- a shocking opening scene, that isn't really addressed later.

I appreciate that the movie seems to be about: to pay attention, is to love.

Lady Bird, a teenager, is so wrapped up in her own troubles that she is not willing or able to see the troubles of the people around her. This is understandable because she's a teenager and she's pretty busy fending off her mother. But it felt weird to just get these glimpses of other people's lives and then get no exploration of those threads-- mainly I'm talking about LB's friend Julie and a creepy math teacher.

I did find this thought-provoking and sometimes quite moving, but kind of unpleasant to watch.
