Does anyone have requests or prompts for me to write stuff for 3 weeks for Dreamwidth?
I recently finished watching the British show "Survivors" on Netflix streaming and I found it deeply satisfying. I think that I learned of this show through a
festivids vid.
A global flu pandemic wipes out about 96-98% of the world's population; this show is about a few of the people who survive and what they do in the weeks and months afterward. There are multiple characters of color, a queer woman, and people of different ages in the main cast. The unofficial leader of the group is a woman named Abby Grant, a mother who believes her son has also survived and is searching for him. She joins Al, Najid, Greg, Anya, Tom, and Sarah; they make a found family of a sort.
Unlike other shows and movies of this type, Survivors is very hopeful. Abby sees the good in people and prioritizes keeping them together and caring for them. Often they succeed in helping other groups of people--if those other groups are non-hostile and willing to be helped.
They have run-ins with other groups who are hostile, including a large community run by a former government official, Samantha. It's really interesting to see these two women leaders facing off. The members of Abby's group also must deal with internal, emotional conflicts and constant, mundane physical dangers.
There are some satisfying romantic storylines, but they are not the main plotlines, which I was glad of.
I loved all the characters deeply, especially Abby who is smart, tough, and caring; and Tom, who is a complex criminal trying to make a new life in a new world. In my view, Tom is not sure he can become the better person that his new friends want and need him to be. He is standing at a precipice-- does he continue in his known role of being a killer, an enforcer, or does he try to change? Is there a middle ground to be found? Abby believes in him, but is that enough?
There are 2 seasons/series available. I wish there were more! It's really enjoyable and I recommend it.

Date: 2012-05-04 01:29 am (UTC)Let me share that we just finished season 1 of The Big C, and it's wonderful. ALmost every ep is 5 stars! Great acting, sit in Minnesota suburbs, Mom has cancer and can't tell anybody yet, Dad and Son and Brother and Students realize something is off, but not what. Lead is Laura Linney and she manages to be hilarious and tragic simultaneously.
