I knew nothing about this movie, and only went because my dad wanted to go to a movie and I couldn't stand the thought of seeing the Clint Eastwood baseball one. It ended up being one of my favorite films I've seen all year, which is saying something.

Take note, there is a metric tonne of shaky cam in this movie. I got used to it after the first few scenes, but it's not a film to see in the theater if you have problems with that.

The movie follows two South LA street cops, Brian Taylor and Mike Zapata, over the course of about a year. It mainly deals with their daily working lives and their strong friendship. They have very dangerous jobs, dealing with rival gang members and a robust drug culture.

The story was subtle, slowly building up relationships and drawing me into the world. It's the kind of movie I thought about for days after seeing it. The strength is the unusual (for this genre) focus on character.

Shaky cam, images of dead bodies, gun violence, images of child abuse, some gore.

Wow, cool. I'm so glad you posted this, because the previews are terrible, yet it sounds like a movie I would really enjoy.
