Lana Wachowski says part of her hope with "Cloud Atlas" is that it will challenge transphobia:

(Title is somewhat misleading). Also she's been doing some great work speaking about her transition, etc.

However, Cloud Atlas uses yellow face. Egregiously.

Intersectionality is so important. Ms. Wachowski is attempting to fight one kind of oppression, but is further oppressing Asian people, and completely ignoring the fact that trans Asian people exist. How are they supposed to react to this movie?

Uh, yeah, oppression in the name of 'justice' is still oppression. I'm also not really understanding how this character fights transphobia? Is she trans? It wasn't specified in the story...

Having just seen it, yeah, that yellowface-featuring storyline was uncomfortable. And I don't think the movie would have lost anything by doing better in this regard, even if it meant less reuse of actors, which I don't think it would have had to.

Hoooly shit that yellow face is not okay. I kind of wanted to throw up when I saw (not enough quotation marks in the world) "Asian" Hugo Weaving.

As someone said in the comments to that article, he actually looks more like a Vulcan or Romulan.

I'm uncomfortable with the fact that this was a huge moneyed undertaking, big business, many hands involved, and all of those folks signed off on this.
