I know a lot of people love "Scandal" but I was not impressed with the pilot episode, which I watched last night.
It's possible I'm over-reacting, but I was pretty put off by the gay subplot in the pilot. A decorated military officer, who is a spokesman for the conservative Republican movement, and has a lot of internalized homophobia, decides to come out publicly just like that? Because Olivia Pope gave him a pep talk? She drew a parallel between hiding her secret affair with the President and this guy hiding his love affair with a man. That bugs me a lot-- having a straight affair, even with the married President, is not nearly the same as living in the closet.
The officer goes from being closeted to coming out at a press conference within minutes, saying that he is proud... that was too rapid and unrealistic. Also, we never got to meet his boyfriend, this man that he professed to love. If I were in Olivia's shoes, I would have brought the boyfriend in to the picture in order to get the officer to use his alibi.
I found the whole plot line to be deeply annoying, and since I didn't connect much with any of the characters, I don't think I'll keep watching this show.
