Social media may be a great boon to communication - and thus to fandom. But the rapidity at which
information spreads can carry the seeds of potential capacity, causing rancorous explosions and hurt feelings (to name a few possible outcomes). Twitterstorms are one such phenomenon - and are, in fact, an
increasingly common problem faced by the fannish community. Two fans braved the storm before last
year’s Worldcon, and helped get such a crisis under control: hear their story.

The very fact there is even still such a thing as SMOF boggles my mind. This just makes me want to smash things.

IIRC it was started as a con about conrunners. "SMOF" is supposed to be a joke, remember? The people who really do rescue worldcons don't toot their own horns much in public. Yes, geeks geeking about running parties for geeks. Who knew?

(I've never attended one, myself. When the con came to CHicago, I'd already burned out from conrunning and had dived into depression instead.)

Depression is even more annoying than conrunning fandom, IIRC.
