sasha_feather: Retro-style poster of women who aspire to lesbianism (you too can be a lesbian)
I'm sorry about folks who are invested in Tumblr. I am not a heavy Tumblr user but I've enjoyed seeing people's art and goofy memes and photos. I am sad to leave it behind.

Welcome, or welcome back, to Dreamwidth. We in fandom need our own spaces.

Decided to try using Tumblr a bit more.

I put up a couple of WisCon-related / disability posts at my Wordpress blog:

I am on a bit of an enforced internet/computer break for about a week. I plan to live like it's the 1990s and watch movies, read paper books*, go outside, etc. I have already watched a couple DVDs from the library. Best way to reach me right now is via text message.

I am also thinking about changing jobs. Working from grant to grant is stressful. Advice on this front welcome.

*My Kindle 2 is borked. It lasted a long time but the little LED light fell out and the screen is frozen. Since it's past warranty, a friend said that the company would probably just offer me a discount on a new one rather than repair this one. I don't know that I want another Kindle necessarily; but I sure miss reading fanfic on it!

The "Ehrmagerd" meme needs to die.

Perhaps it is making fun of the way certain disabled people talk, in which case it is mean-spirited and ableist. Perhaps it is making fun of Valley-girl speech, in which case it is misogynist and still mean-spirited.

I am not humorless: I love memes; I just think they work best when pointing fun at those in power, not those who already lack power. In other words, I don't like it when humor is use to reinforce existing oppressive structures.

Feel free to link this post.

I really want to love Google+. I like a lot of things about it-- the ease of use, the built in posting circles (filters), the photo uploader, and especially the hangouts feature, which prompted me to dig through a box of junk to find my never-used webcam and finally use it! I wanted G+ to replace Facebook, which I have little love for. I'm an early adopter and have provided a lot of feedback.

What I dislike is this business of disallowing pseudonyms. Friends of mine have had their accounts suspended. Other friends of mine are leaving voluntarily over this issue. For a while there, G+ was full of WisCon people and fanficcers and generally the people I want to spend time with. The brand power of Google means that more people will join. Now, people are leaving.

I have a very common legal name which protects me somewhat from stalkers and the like. Which makes me casual about using my given name and connecting it to my pseud. Most people don't have this privilege. Also, how do you even know what's a "real name"? It seems real? Shame on you, Google. Get with the 21st century. Haven't you read any cyberpunk?
