I finished reading the Ancillary books and just loved them. They are so thoughtful and interesting, and Breq is such an appealing character, partly because she is angry all the time. She is allowed to be angry. She is competent and effective. She's a wonder.

Yesterday I watched Crimson Peak, which I mostly liked, but the ending was quite violent. The cinematography was beautiful, with strange bright colors, like the heroine's yellow dress.

I've been catching up on Elementary Season 4. I loved the episode about a local superhero, "You've Got me, Who's Got You?" I love how Sherlock takes care of Clyde the turtle (tortoise? don't know). I catch myself thinking about Joan's outfits at odd times. Just when I think, oh, that dress is my favorite, she'll wear another one that is even better. She is my favorite in all ways: a badass brilliant mature woman who can handle anything and uses fashion like a weapon.

--She wears the MOST amazing outfits. Classy and fashionable and still comfortable looking.
--She is devoted to her work, but has changed careers twice, going from being a surgeon to a sober companion to a detective.
--She likes to sleep in. We often see Sherlock waking her up and she's clearly not a morning person.
--Brilliant in several ways, and calls Sherlock on his BS. I love watching their relationship evolve
--She's single for most of the time we see her. When struggling with whether to pursue a monogamous relationship and get more serious with her boyfriend, Sherlock advises her not to; that she is not made for that kind of relationships and that she's more interesting as she is. Both Joan and Sherlock are misfits. Their families and even their friends don't always understand them.
--She follows her instincts, and is sometimes wrong. She moves forward.

n.b. I haven't seen the more recent episdoes of Elementary because I'm ~~saving~~ them.

Mouth pain, 'nuf said. It's so exhausting and demoralizing.

Good things:

--Saw an old friend at the dog park, unexpectedly!
--Saw The Martian tonight with [twitter.com profile] trinityclare. We both liked it.
--Really, really enjoying Elementary. I'm in season three now because I watch it every day. There is a scene where Sherlock tells Joan that she shouldn't try for a conventional relationship, that it goes against her eccentric, adventure-seeking nature. She feels that her family wants her to have a conventional relationship but she ends up sabotaging her attempts at them. And that this makes her a more interesting person; it's a feature not a bug.
