Nico and I started a rewatch of Dark Angel. I've seen this show through several times, but not in years. I also watched the commentaries. The day I bought the 1st season on DVD was the day after I'd finished reading "Harry Potter" #5, and I was so sad about Sirius dying that I needed something to cheer myself up. So, that would have been summer of 2003; I had just graduated college.

Watching this show in my mid-thirties is an entirely different experience. I feel like an adult.

We watched the first two episodes.

In episode one, we meet all the characters plus get some worldbuilding, side plots, and a big action-adventure plot that bring Max into's Logan's world. It's a double length episode with a lot going on. You can also play "spot that actor". Michael Weatherly went onto NCIS; Alimi Ballard went onto CSI; Alessandro Juliani went onto Battlestar Galactica.

I don't understand why, now, but I used to be a Max/Logan shipper. Probably mostly because the show was, and I went along with it. But watching now, Logan is so, so creepy. He finds out Max's address and breaks into her apartment and steals her medicine. When she comes to confront him about it, he has candles lit and says something about how she can stay the night if she wants. He's stalkery.

My opinion about Normal, the boss at the bike messenger service, also changed drastically. To the young people who work for him, Normal represents The Man, and they get sick of him nagging them. But he's just a guy who is trying to run a business in a bad economy. He seems so much more sympathetic to me this go-round. Herbal complains to Normal that he doesn't want to deliver a package that he knows contains pornography-- it's bad for his karma. Normal says, "It's none of your business! Or mine! Just deliver the package!" And I'm like.... he's right. Do your job Herbal!

We will of course see more of his character in "Dawg Day Afternoon" at the end of season 2.

Max is wonderful, as always; and Nico said she is "perhaps too kind". For example, she helps out Sketchy when she really doesn't need to. She's kind to Eric, the hapless guy she picked up at the bar, when again she didn't need to be. She's very loyal and she cares despite herself. In the pilot, we see her rather effortlessly manipulate people (Bruno and the other villains), but I get the impression she doesn't like doing so. She'd rather be straight-forward and honest.

In one of the commentaries (which I listened to years and years ago) they talk about Max being an abused child. She obviously considers the other X5s her family, and says so, but it seems to me that she considers Sketchy and her other co-workers as family also. Her found family.

Original Cindy (Valerie Rae Miller) is THE BEST; I love her; she's so beautiful and bad ass and everyone should listen to her always.

Yes! I found him less objectionable in season one than two, but he is still overall an entitled creeper. I'm so glad you're still enjoying it on rewatch, DA was one of my first and will probably always be a forever fandom and it makes me happy to see people still liking it all these years later.

I almost forgot about that show. I was so, so, so pissed when the network screwed it.

I did a Dark Angel rewatch a few years ago and felt the same about Max/Logan. I shipped it more when I was younger but now it's a bit yikes.

I'll have to look up the commentaries, I don't think I've ever heard them!
