Every day I'm thinking about how good a TV show Ted Lasso is.
It is available on Apple TV.
This 10-episode comedy could so easily have gone too far into caricature, but instead made the people feel real. Rebecca is not a cartoon villain; Ted is not a cartoon hero. Often characters like the journalist (Trent Crimm, the Independent) are ones you expect to feel one way about, but then your feeling towards them changes.
People are adults who confront their problems. The humor is warm. The message is simply: Believe. Believe in other people, build them up. See the goodness in others and cultivate it. But hold others accountable too.
If you are put off by sports, know that this is more of a work place comedy. Their work happens to be football/soccer. But we don't have to endure a whole lot of actual soccer in this.
Spoilers below the cut - just random things i liked.
Roy and Keeley is a great ship?! They are like goth guy/hello Kitty gal.
There are a number of nice apologies in this show: really a model for how to apologize. Nathan apologizes too much and needs to be led into self-confidence, but others like Jamie apologize too little and need to face consequences. Ted apologizes an appropriate amount. He also praises people a lot.
The cast is mostly men (it's a football/soccer club) but there are multiple women who are just really great. Rebecca and Keeley have a really wonderful friendship.
There are a lot of really funny, warmly funny, gags, like Ted's punny dad jokes and physical comedy. My favorite parts of the show were Nathan's speech to the team (absolute genius set-up an execution), and the "Diamond Dogs": a group of men who assemble and help each other work through relationship problems.
Coach Beard reads as autistic to me; maybe just a head canon but I like it.
Things that I hope are explored in S2:
Ted's panic attacks. It's an interesting part of his character that isn't fully explored yet. I think that he has anxiety because he doesn't fully open up to others, which the exception of Coach Beard. He tries to solve other people's problems so much, and maybe doesn't quite address his own fully. My roommate said, it's really validating to have a character who is a positive force in the world, who has this problem.
I'd like to know how Coach Beard and Ted met and started working together.
Jamie Tartt started out obnoxious, but grew into this somewhat sympathetic character, and I kind of hope he comes back in season 2.
This show achieves A LOT in 10 short episodes, and that's partly because it doesn't drag out problems the way some shows do. People act and resolve things.
In short, please watch this show so I can talk about it with you.
