Some movies I watched
Oct. 22nd, 2021 07:18 amVarious movies I watched lately:
Divergent
This wasn't bad, exactly, but it was pretty forgettable. The dystopian world building didn't make a whole lot of sense, and it's weird that they cast white people as all the major characters, in a story where they are supposed to be revolutionaries.
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya sisterhood.
I tried watching this with a friend, and we did not finish it. It was very bad. It's a family drama about well-off white Southern women. Towards the beginning, some old ladies drug and kidnap Sandra Bullock's character, bring her back to Lousiana, and then attempt to force her to reconcile with her mother. She doesn't seem too upset about it, but YIKES.
Dunkirk
I really liked this despite the fact that it's a war film. It was beautifully made and gripping. It's true that there are almost no women in the film, no people of color, and many of the young men look almost identical. I enjoyed it anyways; the characters matter less than the action plot and the setting. The cinematography is great and the story holds tension.
Say Anything
For a classic movie that is constantly referenced in pop culture, this was just super dull. Again not bad, but very forgettable.
Source for all of these was library DVDs.
