Vid meme day 1

I've really been enjoying the fan vid meme that's been going around so I'm going to try my hand at it. I feel I should say, I haven't been watching vids for very long.
Day 1 - A vid that made you start watching a brand new show

This is a kink vid about the canonical kinky relationship between Ned and Chuck on "Pushing Daisies", a magical realism show. Ned and Chuck are in a romantic and sexual relationship and yet they cannot touch each other, or Chuck (who is a lady btw) will die, for reasons relating to magic. They have clever ways to deal with this. I am watching this show via Netflix and enjoying it--it's silly, visually rich, often fluffy. I kind of have to be in the right mood for it, and I like the character arcs and family situations better than the episode plots, which almost universally involve solving a bizarre murder, and which generally bore me. The secondary characters, played by Chi McBride and Kristen Chenowith, are awesome. So, it's pretty good! But the vid is better than the show, for reasons of funny, creative kink, a perfect song choice, and the rich visuals of the source, and you don't need to see the show to watch the vid.

Date: 2010-07-31 03:41 am (UTC)I heart Pushing Daisies, although of course it has some episodes that make me go 'ergh,' like the fat hate one. But it's very...fresh and different, visually.

Date: 2010-07-31 03:43 am (UTC)You hit on something really fascinating here: "I like the character arcs and family situations better than the episode plots, which almost universally involve solving a bizarre murder, and which generally bore me."
While I can't say I'm bored, exactly, by the episodic plots, this statement kind of made me have an AHA! moment -- in a weird way, PD is a show with a fancy premise, but what the show is REALLY about has very little to do with the conceit of the murder mystery that's central to driving episodic plots. It's like the mystery aspect is a structure to hang all of this other stuff on, and what the show is really about is happening in the between spaces. Does that make any sense? It's a big, chewy thought and I'm still sorting it!
This is one of the first vids that was recced to me when I asked for recs, and it makes me giddy. :D I like framing Ned/Chuck in a way that discusses kink. I also like that the show is fairly clear on the fact that their relationship is sexual, even though they cannot touch. (It also makes me think about disability issues -- Ned's power is a "gift" in a sense, but it clearly impacts his everyday life in a variety of ways that are positive and negative, and he had these issues even before Chuck came into the picture.
Ummmmm I kind of just wrote a whole post in your comment section! *-___-*

Date: 2010-07-31 04:02 am (UTC)Haha, oh, that show. It has SUCH pretty visuals, but the show annoyed me a lot. XD (IF ONLY IT HAD BEEN THE SHOW ABOUT HOW OLIVE AND CHUCK MET WHEN THEY WERE TINY AT SUMMER CAMP TOGETHER AND ARE REUNITED YEARS LATER WHEN MEETING THROUGH NED & THE PIE SHOP AND THEN OLIVE AND CHUCK BECOME GIRLFRIENDS! That show I would have loved I think.)
