The dog paddle was a giant chaotic free for all with hundreds of dogs, hundreds of people, and it overwhelmed both me and Sorcha. I think she did go in the water? IDK, she got wet anyway. Mostly I didn't see her because she ran all over the place. It was too overstimulating for us. Like dog, like owner, we both seem to prefer quieter, controlled situations.

I repotted lots of plants yesterday. What I am going to do with all these spider plants? I left 2 smaller ones in the hall with a "free" sign and someone took them, so that is good.

The other day I read Theft of Assets, Destruction of Property, an HP story by Helenish, and it was wonderful. I liked that Draco is treated, societally speaking, as a woman might be treated in our society, and that it's unremarked upon. I also like that he finds his own way within that structure. Content note for abuse.

Before I forget! When I went to have my blood drawn in the hospital yesterday, I remarked on how much I liked the lights to the phlebotomist. She said she liked them too because she gets bad headaches and they reduce the glare.

The lights shone upwards onto a piece of white fabric that was stretched out like a baby bouncer. From there it reflected into the two blood-draw bays on either side of the barrier. It was all reflected light that didn't shine directly into anyone's eyes; it was bright but diffuse.

Wonderful.

My elbows are sore today! Bonus. I don't feel like I am talking enough lately, and I am pretty upset about my joints hurting, so I am going to be writing more here.

Someone today (my CST) asked me if I had plans for the long weekend. I don't really-- I'm pretty broke. I'll probably just watch Warehouse 13 and go to the dog park, maybe try to get some things crossed off my to-do list. When I told her I go to the dog park every day, she said, "when I'm reincarnated I want to come back as one of your pets." :D

My dog is a wonderful blessing and I am grateful for her every day. We went to the dog park twice yesterday and twice today.

Sick today with major sinus pain; watching a lot of the TV show "Alphas" on Netflix. I tried the pilots of a few different shows before settling on this one. I like that it is an ensemble show with good actors and good guest stars. There are women and people of color in the main cast. All the characters have back story. It is about a team of people with special abilities (basically mutant powers but not superheroes) who investigate crimes and track down other people like themselves.

Today at the park, Sorcha met her doppleganger!

Wendy and Sorcha

Wendy is another 8 year old Greyhound who looks almost exactly like Sorcha! Wendy was born a few months earlier. They are both white with dark spots on their skin that shows through their white hair. They both have fawn spots on their ears, but Wendy has more of that which is the main distinguishing feature. They are even the same size. I think Sorcha has a little more condition (ie fat and muscle). I should really get some cards to hand out at the dog park for moments like this, so I can find these people again.

Sorcha and I had a lovely, full day yesterday. The heat dropped from 100 degrees F to around 85 which was a huge relief. In the morning we went to the Verona dog park where we met (among other dogs) a huge 1-year-old Great Dane. He made my rather large dog seem small!

After a break for lunch and some Glitch-playing, we went over to [personal profile] were_duck's place to help her sort clothes. Put some pillows on the floor, and Sorcha will happily lie there for hours. We then went for a walk at Quann park, a huge dog park that just got mowed for hay. There weren't many other folks there. Later in the evening we decided to go to the Terrace and have brats.

After all this, I was worn out and my legs hurt. The walking does seem to help loosen up my hinky hip joint though.

Last Thursday I went to [personal profile] antarcticlust's dissertation defense along with a bunch of other folks. She did a good job of making it understandable-- it was about megafaunal extinctions in North America and the impact this had on the types of trees growing and the types of landscapes present. She also has a Really great blog!

You are probably all going to rebel against me for this but I'm going with the opposite of the poll results and have been mostly pronouncing my dog's name like "Sorsha". I have reasons: When I say it Sor-cha like the word "porch", no one understands what the fuck I'm saying. They invariably say "What?" and then half the time they think I'm saying "Dorcha." One kid thought I was saying "Norcha". (IDEK). She has a soft and lady-like personality, which the soft sound of Sor-sha seems to go with. I know that animals don't really have gender, but if she did have gender she'd be femme. It took a while of hanging out with her to settle the name in. The spelling won't change.

However, I don't really care what my dog gets called, and neither does she. You all can go on saying her name however you like, both in your own heads and when you meet her. I am not fickle in most things, but I'm fickle in this. She also gets called Princess Buttercup (after the Princess Bride), Buddy (my standard name for all animals), and Dear.

I had the day off today so we went to the park twice. We met a little black Greyhound named Zoe.

I am fickle and super inconsistent about how I say my dog's name. I should probably stick to something because I've now had her for 7 weeks. Weigh in! (I think "pronunciation" is the right spelling but I don't want to edit the poll.)

1. A neighbor who is moving out gave me some frozen chicken.

2. Sorcha is such a good dog! She is good with kids and getting bolder at the dog park (ie playing more with other dogs). A little neighborhood kid grabbed her tail and she didn't even flinch. She must have had a pretty good life wherever she was before because she doesn't have a lot of issues. Anyway I told this kid to let go, but he didn't, and then one of the other kids said, "He doesn't speak English". It makes me wish I'd kept up my Spanish education. Today this same kid was running away from his dad (who was in the community garden) toward the street and I didn't know the words for stop! come back! Oh neighborhood kids.

3. WisCon / fandom / DW teaches me a lot.

First: my dog is A-OK!

On Saturday during WisCon I went home for the dinner hour and Tiptree Auction, thinking I'd have a little rest, walk the dog, have a light supper at home, and just take a relaxing break. Ahahahah, yeah right!

The main dog park by my house was closed for the Brat Fest, meaning the gates were open to let people park there. So I took Sorcha into the small dog park next to it, which has fence on 3 sides and a creek on the 4th side. We walked all the way down and started walking back, when she went down to the water. I thought she was sniffing it or taking a drink, but suddenly she jumped in and started leaping/swimming across the creek! I stood on the bike path yelling at her, but she kept going all the way across and up the other bank. I've only had her for five weeks: I had no idea her interests and talents included swimming in filthy creek water.

I yelled at a man standing there, "Can you catch her?" But he couldn't? I contemplated leaping into the shallow water after her, but instead I walked all the way down to the bridge and crossed the creek. By that time she was long gone. I texted my roommate who called back and said he'd come help me look for her. Crying, I asked every passing bicyclist and pedestrian if they had seen a dog. The first people had; everyone else said no.

I walked all the way down to Lake Monona when my phone rang; some bicylists had found her! My number is on her tag on her collar. The man stayed on the phone with me while I walked over to the railroad tracks where they were. Apparently she had been running in traffic on a busy thoroughfare while people honked at her! When I got her back on leash, she did not appear scared though-- just wet, dirty, stinky and bedraggled. I was so grateful I gave the good Samaritan a hug. My roommate met up with me and called Sorcha "the devil's mistress": "She is so calm and sweet, but secretly she is up to no good!".

When we got home I immediately made her get in the tub for a shower.

Then I took a shower myself, had a little snack and an outfit change, and it was time to go back into WisCon.

ETA: Google maps tells me that her route of running is a little over a half mile; the whole thing probably took less than 20 minutes (but felt longer).

Sorcha and I go to the dog park every day. She is pretty timid and likes it best when there are not a lot of other dogs there. She also likes it when she has multiple people paying attention to her. Today was the Best! Day! Ever! because we met another Greyhound. The other dog is called Zeebee and is a brindle. A young couple are her humans and they've had her for a bit over a year. The dogs ran together and then we walked a lap around the park. Sorcha seemed much more secure having another greyhound and several humans around her. She ran quite a bit and smiled a lot. We also talked to a guy and his dog that we met there the other day, and an older couple who used to have a Greyhound, so she got lots of attention.

I took a couple of rather bad photos and posted them here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sasha_feather

It was very hot and bright out today. My browser widget says it's still 74 degrees F! Now Sorcha is on the sofa with me, laying on my feet.

It's nice; even when I come home from work feeling like crap, I go for a walk with the dog and I feel better. I also talk to all kinds of people when I am walking her. I've met some neighbors with dogs, for instance, and people at the park. I talked to some Hispanic guys at the soccer fields yesterday and I think one of them had a prison or gang tattoo on his face (something by his eye? lol I'm so innocent). My roommate's boyfriend talks to me a lot more now that the dog is around. Dogs get people to talk, even me.
