1. A couple of my plants looked very bad after I left them alone for 2 weeks, but when I got home I put them in the sink and soaked them, and they seem to be doing OK now.

2. I am really enjoying the Expanse season 6! The writing and acting are so good. The women are powerful and interesting and bad ass.

3. Adulting I did today included cancelling a couple of auto-renewing online subscriptions and changing my bed sheets. I backed up and deleted some media from my computer.

4. It's hard to tell but I might still have a sinus infection even after a course of antibiotics. Frustrating.

5. While I was at the farm visiting my family, I read a really wonderful book called "The Darkness Outside Us." It's a hard SciFi book about two astronauts on a rescue mission. It's marketed as YA. Highly recommended, gripping, precisely plotted, and also gay!

Blooming right now: the bean Catalpa trees, of which there are 4 in the neighborhood. My roommate said they look like trees out of a Studio Ghibli movie. Huge, heart-shaped leaves provide wonderful deep shade. The flowers are a cone of white blooms. Later in the year, long bean pods droop from the trees and fall onto the ground.

I bought a small fucshia at the garden store and it has one blossom and some buds. Today I moved some hosta plants in the backyard; I took them out of the full sun and planted them behind the building where it's shady. In the small garden plot out back, I have spaghetti squash and red cabbage, and it's fun to go out in the morning and water them with the hose.

I was bored enough, or let's say inspired by Queer Eye, to organize one of the kitchen cupboards and do a small bit of cleaning. I find this show to be very heartwarming and uplifting.

A difficult day for me, physically, but I am enjoying a lot of things in my life.

1. My new Kobo e-reader is allowing me to read again. I tried Autonomous by Annalee Newitz but bounced off it. So, I'm reading fanfic for "The Magicians" and "Schitt's Creek" and a little MCU here and there. Today I sat on the stoop among my plants and enjoyed the breeze while reading.

2. My houseplants are mostly outside on the stoop now. There are a few that continue to live inside year-round, such as the African violet and peace lily. I bought a fuschia and a begonia and I really love them.

3. Abbie, my good dog, just wants to lay around now that it's sort of hot.

4. The 2nd-run theater plays movies for just $3.50, so yesterday I went with my friend R. and her mom to see "The Mustang." This is an indie film about a prisoner who joins a program to train feral Mustangs for auction. I have mixed feelings about the writing of the story, and have to think about it a bit more, but I really enjoyed the experience of the movie overall.

1. What’s involved in “queering up straight people”?

I think I listed this as a joke, but it's also something I strive for: when around straight people (at work, at family gatherings, at the dog park, etc), try to gently challenge those folks and influence them in the direction of queer politics. I don't always achieve this.

2. Tell me about your first houseplants

I had spider plants pretty early on, and I still have those same spider plants. I don't remember getting them. I also had a rabbit's-foot fern, a hanging plant. These plants have fuzzy rhizomes that look like rabbits' feet. The rhizomes reached all around the pot and nearly encased it.

3. Why do fanvids makes you happy?

They are a way to really feel something for about 3 minutes, and then be done with that feeling if you so choose. They are creative, beautiful, and some of them are like the essence of a cerain emotion. A great blending of audio and visual beauty. A way to turn off the intellectual narrator part of my brain and just feel, for a little while.

4. How did you decide to be a scientist?

I loved animals and plants, always, and so biology was a natural fit. I felt that going into research was a way to make the world a better place and contribute to humanity's knowledge in some small way. I also felt that going into science would be a more secure way to earn a living than being a writer.

5. If money were no issue, would you like to live alone?

No; I have lived alone and it was fine, but I do better if I have a good roommate. I like knowing that someone is around. I stay on top of chores more and I simply feel better.

Today is pleasantly cool, a bit of chill in the air which feels really nice, especially when I'm out walking. I saw and heard several Sandhill cranes today. They are so magical. Abbie is sleeping on the couch and my roommate and i are both on our laptops, being quietly companionable.

I took in all my houseplants as there is a frost advisory tonight. I went through and counted 20 pots. We have a small place so I'm going to try and give some of the spider plants away.

I'm feeling very congested, but otherwise pretty good. Fall is a nice time of year.

Doing my therapy homework which is: dog park, writing in my journal, and eating regular meals.

Having a weird mood crash. It helped to get out of the house and do things, so I picked up another shift at the humane society. Also: air conditioning. It was 85 degrees F today (29 C), which is hot for this early in the season, and I'm not used to it yet.

I dropped off some clothes at Good Will and went inside to admire their newly remodeled store.

Went to the dog park. Mostly sat on a bench in the shade, and eventually some of the regulars came by so I sat and listened to them chat. Ended up spending close to two hours at the park.

Watered some plants. It's time for this asparagus fern to get rehomed, because it just stabbed me in the finger with one of its thorns. Some of the other plants I have look a little rough from being newly placed outside.

Picked some strawberries from the back garden and am eating them right now!

I broke a glass today and a plate yesterday. Dropping things and not-quite-grasping things is one of those weird RA symptoms. I think my anxious/depressed mood is a combo of missing WisCon people and having inflammation and the hot weather.

A read a fanfic, Soulmate Theory for Dummies, by piffle, where Bucky is a plant hoarder like I am and has a cat.

There are a lot of plants, he admits silently, his eyes traveling over all the variously shaped leaves, just to make sure Stark didn’t touch anything. He still likes them, and doesn’t think he’ll ever give them up. They were the first living things he’d been able to lay his hands on after leaving HYDRA, the first things he hadn’t destroyed, and he’s grown fond of them since, adding to their number whenever he happens across one that he doesn’t already own.

He doesn't take anything toxic to cats. I think eventually he'll get a dog, so nothing toxic to pets generally.

I imagine he starts out with:
African Violet
Spider Plants (inspired by Black Widow; easy to grow) (Chlorophytum comosum)
Orchids
Bamboo
Boston Fern
Burro's Tail (Sedum morganianum)
Friendship plant (Pilea involucrata)
Ghost Plant (Secum weinbergii) (because he's a ghost get it)
Wax plant (Hoya carnosa)

I spent a good chunk of the day outside today, because it was a cool 70 degrees F (21 C). So great.

This purple plant is a new one for me, it's called Persian Shield. Whether or not it's actually Persian, I have no idea. It's growing very well and I plopped it in a bigger pot. A sprig broke off, so I stuck that in water and will see if it roots.

I sold a few plants on Craigslist: some purple queen and one of my palms, and even one big spider plant, to 2 different people for a total of 60 dollars. The spider plants, I have so many of, that the supply is much greater than the demand. I really love how vigorous they are. They seize life. If they could survive the winter, they'd be invasive.

I need more pots and potting soil. In my dreams; I would have a big green house and growing magic!

Terrarium!

I made this terrarium out of an old dessicator. A dessicator is a piece of laboratory equipment used for drying samples. They are heavy and made from thick glass; this one has an opening on the lid where a vacuum pump can be attached.

I put glass beads and activated charcoal in the bottom, then sphagnum moss, then potting soil and the plants. I had to go to three different stores to find a greenhouse with small, healthy plants that I wanted. The greenhouse that I did find was fantastic; all the plants looked very healthy and happy. I got the activated charcoal at a pet store (and probably paid too much for it, as it's sold for aquarium filters).

I hope the plants live. But if not, I can just do this project again in the spring!
